Three-String
Ukulele Chords

Is there really a need for all four strings on a ukulele?  Basic chords have only three notes (root, third and fifth), and with dominant 7 chords, which add a fourth note (the seventh tone of the chord), you can easily leave out the fifth tone of the chord.

By taking off the A string from a soprano, concert or tenor ukulele and tuning the C string down a half step to B, the three remaining strings are tuned like the first three strings of a guitar: GBE.  This makes it a lot easier for guitarists who want to learn the ukulele or for ukulele players who think they may someday want to play guitar.

You can do the same thing on a baritone ukulele by removing the low D string.  With D'Addario EJ99B baritone ukulele strings, only that low D is wound, so when it's removed, all three remaining strings are unwound.
